Tour itinerary

Materuni, home to the Chagga tribe, remains a genuine tribal village situated just 15 kilometers from Moshi Town and is the last settlement before Kilimanjaro National Park.

In the morning, you will be collected from Moshi by our English-speaking guide, who will drive you to Materuni Village. Upon arrival, you will check in at the village office and begin your exploration.

Your first stop will be the Materuni Waterfalls, about a 40-minute walk from the village. During this trek, your guide will share insights about Chagga culture, village life, and the local flora and fauna. The views are spectacular, and on a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit. The waterfall, towering over 80 meters, features a pool at its base, perfect for a refreshing swim, so be sure to bring your swimwear.

After enjoying the natural beauty of the falls, you will return to Materuni Village for a traditional Chagga lunch. You will also have the chance to sample local banana beer, a unique experience not to be missed.

Following lunch, you’ll delve into the coffee experience, learning about the cultivation, drying, roasting, and processing of coffee. You can participate in grinding the coffee beans while enjoying traditional Chagga songs and dances, offering a fun cultural immersion. Before leaving, you can savor the freshly brewed coffee and take in the scenic views of the surrounding rainforest.

The next leg of your journey takes you to Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs. The drive, which takes about an hour and 20 minutes, traverses rough terrain, passing sugar cane fields and transitioning into African scrubland with dried river beds and baobab and acacia trees along the way.

Kikuletwa Hot Springs, near Rundugai Village, is a stunning location to relax. Surrounded by palm and fig trees with twisting roots, the clear turquoise water is inviting for a swim. Despite being termed “hot springs,” the water is pleasantly cool, as it is fed by the waters of Kilimanjaro.

You will have the afternoon to unwind as you choose—whether lounging in the sun, engaging with locals at a nearby bar, or swimming. The excursion concludes with a departure from the hot springs just before sunset, and you will return to Moshi, refreshed and relaxed.
