Mkomazi National Park

A Hidden Stronghold of Africa’s Last Wild Savannah.

Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a remote and ecologically significant wilderness located in northern Tanzania, spanning the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions. To the north, the park directly borders Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, forming part of a vast cross border conservation landscape. Situated approximately 120 kilometers east of Moshi town, Mkomazi offers a true off the beaten path safari experience within one of East Africa’s most important ecosystems.

The park forms a core component of the Mkomazi Tsavo Ecosystem, the second largest transboundary ecosystem in East Africa after the renowned Serengeti Mara system. This ecological connectivity supports wide ranging wildlife movements and contributes to the park’s exceptional biodiversity. Along the Umba River, riverine forests provide refuge for rare colobus monkeys, adding to the park’s unique primate diversity.

Mkomazi National Park is characterized by a semi arid climate with a bimodal rainfall pattern, shaping a landscape dominated by open savannahs and dry woodland. The southern extension of the Sahel habitat is present here, marked by Acacia Commiphora vegetation that supports a range of specially adapted wildlife species. This distinctive environment makes Mkomazi one of the most important conservation areas for dry-land ecosystems in Tanzania.

The park is remarkably rich in wildlife, with at least 18 mammal species recorded, including members of the Big Five. It is particularly notable for its large and easily visible populations of gerenuk and its impressive concentrations of Beisa oryx—species rarely seen in such numbers elsewhere in Tanzania. Bird-life is equally outstanding, with over 450 bird species documented, making Mkomazi a compelling destination for birdwatchers.

Renowned for its conservation value, Mkomazi National Park is considered one of Africa’s richest savannah ecosystems in terms of rare and endemic fauna and flora. The presence of endangered species such as African wild dogs and black rhinoceros underscores its global ecological importance and positions Mkomazi as a key stronghold for wildlife conservation in East Africa.
