A 4 day trek on Mount Meru offers a rewarding climb on Tanzania’s second highest peak. Located within Arusha National Park, this trek combines mountain scenery, wildlife encounters, and a quieter alternative to Kilimanjaro.
The trail passes through forest, moorland, and alpine zones. Along the way, trekkers may see giraffes, buffaloes, and various bird species. This makes Mount Meru one of the few mountain climbs in Africa where wildlife viewing is part of the experience.
On clear days, climbers enjoy strong views of Mount Kilimanjaro. These views are especially visible from higher elevations and during early morning hours.
The 4-day itinerary allows gradual altitude gain, making it a strong option for acclimatization before attempting Kilimanjaro. It is also less crowded, offering a more controlled and quieter trekking environment.
A 4-day Mount Meru trek provides a balanced mix of challenge, scenery, and preparation. It is suitable for trekkers seeking a shorter climb with strong environmental and training value.
Start your adventure with a drive to Momella Gate for registration and a briefing. Begin your trek through the vibrant rainforest, accompanied by an armed ranger for your safety due to wildlife in the area. Along the way, you may spot giraffes, buffaloes, and other animals as you journey to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters), where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night.

After breakfast, continue your climb through the lush forest and into the moorland zone. The trail steepens as you make your way to Saddle Hut at an altitude of 3,570 meters. Once you arrive, take some time to rest before embarking on an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru at 3,820 meters, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Rise early for a midnight departure on your summit attempt. Trek through the darkness, passing Rhino Point (3,800 meters) and Cobra Point (4,350 meters), until you reach Socialist Peak (4,566 meters) at sunrise. Here, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. After celebrating your accomplishment, descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent through the forest, following a different route back to Momella Gate. This pathway provides a chance to observe more wildlife and appreciate the park’s diverse flora. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest and to celebrate your successful climb.
